This 7-day trekking itinerary is carefully designed to maximize acclimatization, improve summit success rates, and provide trekkers with an unforgettable journey through Kilimanjaro’s diverse ecological zones.

From lush rainforests and giant heather moorlands to alpine deserts and the snow-capped summit of Uhuru Peak, every day reveals a different side of Africa’s highest mountain. Day 1: Arrival in Tanzania – Welcome to Arusha

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), you will be met by our representative and transferred to Planet Lodge Arusha. Relax after your journey and enjoy the peaceful surroundings of the lodge. In the evening, your mountain guide will conduct a comprehensive trek briefing and equipment check to ensure you are fully prepared for the adventure ahead.

Day 2: Arusha – Machame Gate (1,800m) – Machame Camp (3,000m)

After breakfast, drive to Machame Gate, where registration formalities are completed. The trek begins through the dense montane rainforest on the southern slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. Towering trees, exotic plants, and colorful birdlife make this section particularly enjoyable.

Day 3: Machame Camp (3,000m) – Shira Camp (3,840m)

Leaving the rainforest behind, the trail ascends through heather and moorland. Enjoy stunning views of Mount Meru and the Shira Plateau as you gain altitude. The landscape becomes more open, offering fantastic photography opportunities.

Day 4: Shira Camp (3,840m) – Lava Tower (4,630m) – Barranco Camp (3,960m)

This important acclimatization day follows the principle of climbing high and sleeping low. Ascend to Lava Tower, a dramatic volcanic rock formation, before descending to Barranco Camp. The descent allows your body to adjust to the altitude while providing spectacular views of the Barranco Valley.

Day 5: Barranco Camp (3,960m) – Karanga Camp (4,035m)

Begin the day by climbing the famous Barranco Wall, one of Kilimanjaro’s most exciting and rewarding sections. Once at the top, continue through rolling alpine terrain to Karanga Camp. The shorter hiking day allows additional time for rest and acclimatization.

Day 6: Karanga Camp (4,035m) – Barafu Camp (4,640m)

Today’s trek takes you to Barafu Camp, the base camp for your summit attempt. The landscape becomes increasingly rugged as you approach the high-altitude zone. After an early dinner, rest and prepare for the midnight ascent to Uhuru Peak.

Day 7: Barafu Camp (4,640m) – Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Mweka Camp (3,100m)

Around midnight, begin the final ascent toward the Roof of Africa. The climb is challenging but incredibly rewarding. Reach Stella Point at sunrise before continuing to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Celebrate your achievement with unforgettable summit photographs before descending to Barafu Camp for a short rest and then continuing to Mweka Camp.

Day 8: Mweka Camp (3,100m) – Mweka Gate (1,640m) – Arusha

After breakfast, descend through the rainforest to Mweka Gate. Upon receiving your summit certificate, meet your driver and transfer back to Arusha. Spend the night at Planet Lodge Arusha, enjoying a hot shower and a well-deserved celebration.

Day 9: Departure

Enjoy breakfast at Planet Lodge before your transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your onward flight. If you wish to extend your stay, we can arrange a Tanzania safari or Zanzibar beach holiday.

Essential Gear & Equipment for Your Kilimanjaro Trek

Proper preparation is essential for a safe and successful Kilimanjaro climb. As you will pass through several climate zones, from tropical rainforest to arctic summit conditions, having the right equipment is crucial.

Head & Neck

• Sun hat or cap, warm beanie, buff/neck gaiter, sunglasses, and a headlamp with spare batteries.

Upper Body

• Lightweight and thermal base layers, short and long-sleeve trekking shirts, fleece jacket, insulated down jacket, and a waterproof/windproof shell jacket.

Lower Body

• Thermal leggings, hiking trousers, comfortable camp trousers, waterproof shell trousers, and optional hiking shorts.

Hands

• Lightweight liner gloves and insulated waterproof outer gloves or mittens.

Footwear & Socks

• Waterproof hiking boots, warm hiking socks, spare trekking socks, optional liner socks, camp shoes, gaiters, and micro-spikes (recommended from December to February).

Tip: Bring enough socks to change regularly and keep your feet dry and comfortable.

Personal First Aid & Medications

• Sunscreen (SPF 30+), lip balm, antiseptic cream, prescription medications, cough drops or syrup, pain relief medication, and mosquito repellent.

Important: Please consult your doctor before travel regarding any medication required for high-altitude trekking.

• Two reusable water bottles (1L each), hydration bladder (2–3L), energy bars, trail mix, nuts, and electrolyte supplements (optional).
